Historic England awards £1.5m for repairs at two Stoke-on-Trent heritage buildings

Two Stoke-on-Trent heritage sites will receive grants to fund repairs to protect them.
Burslem Indoor Market and Bethesda Chapel in Hanley are among 37 sites which are confirmed to be receiving money from Historic England's £15 million Heritage at Risk Capital Fund, funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
£1 million has been awarded for Burslem Indoor Market to carry out "urgent repairs" to the roof along with some timber, stonework and external refurbishment to improve drainage.
It's hoped the work will "protect and preserve the building ahead of potential future development," the city council has said.
Meanwhile the £521, 737 for the grade-II listed Bethesda Chapel will go towards ongoing restoration work under the ownership of Re-Form Heritage.

The council previously secured an emergency repair package made up of £318,000 from Historic England and £1.3 million from local Levelling Up Partnership funds to pay for safeguarding works at a number of historic buildings in Burslem, including the market building.
In addition to Burslem Indoor Market, Stoke-on-Trent City Council is continuing to explore a number of options for the Wedgwood Institute which has fallen into disuse, due partly to water leaking in and causing damage.
This includes using potential funds from the Schools Capital Programme for the extensive refurbishment of each of the rooms on the ground floor of the building so it can be used for education purposes in the future.
