Plans have been approved for a brand-new waste transfer facility to be built on a busy road in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.

D Price and Sons, based on Sutherland Road, applied for permission in October 2022 to build a waste transfer facility at its Longton site which is currently occupied by offices, a plant maintenance workshop and a weighbridge.

The site is currently brownfield land, formerly the location of various industrial activities, but more recently the site has been the location of a petrol station that has since been demolished.

Permission was granted on 14 August for the site to be changed into a waste transfer facility with construction of eight concrete bays.

D Price and Sons is based on Sutherland Road in Longton (Nub News).

An application form submitted by D Price and Sons states: "Upon arrive arrival, waste will be tipped into a hopper on the western side of the picking line. The tipped waste is then conveyed on a conveyer belt eastward and handpicked for plastics, paper and card, wood and green waste, and WEEE waste.

"The conveyed waste then passes through the Majorette Screen where it is screened to produce fines. Plasterboard is also handpicked from the remaining waste on the conveyer belt before a magnet over the metal waste bay will remove metals automatically.

"Hardcore is the final material from the picking line. All material removed from the conveyed waste will be stored as segregated stockpiles in the ten constructed waste bays accompanying the picking line."

Eight extra staff will be employed at the 2162 square meter site, taking the total employees to 20.

The new facility will process 30,000 tonnes per annum of waste (Nub News).

The noise impact statement claims: "It is estimated that noise levels from the extended site, picking station and skip storage area are not likely to result in an adverse impact at the nearest houses, i.e. they are likely to be below the existing background levels.

"The only potential exception would be for Paragon Road houses where noise levels are predicted to be just above the very low background levels very early on a Saturday morning.

"However this is not likely to be the case at any other time where road / rail noise and other activities will increase, raising the background level and masking noise from the site."

The new facility will process 30,000 tonnes per annum of waste and operate 6am-6pm Monday-Friday and 7am-5pm on Saturdays.
