A vacant nightclub in Stoke-on-Trent is set to be transformed into a new restaurant and four commercial units after plans were approved by the city council.

A property developer applied for the "change of use of existing single-storey nightclub to one restaurant and four commercial units" at 27 Pall Mall, Hanley.

The building, which has been empty since 2016, has "progressively deteriorated due to disuse" and the windows have been boarded up to prevent access.

A Design and Access Statement says: "The regeneration of the existing building aims to improve the intrinsic character, appearance and significance of the conservation area whilst positively impacting the visual amenity.

"The aim of the proposed development is to provide new commercial floorspace transforming the existing premises into an exciting place to work and visit. The design aim is to rejuvinate the existing neglected brownfield site.

"The large shop fronts will aid in promoting businesses to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, creating a sense of identity and place."

These plans were recently approved by Stoke-on-Trent City Council and an Officer's Report says: "The building has been vacant for some years now, but has historically been used as a bar/nightclub and restaurant.

"Proposals would essentially retain the buildings existing features, but these will be restored and/or upgraded, recognising that its current condition is poor and deteriorating due to disuse. Proposals would enable the building to be brought back into use, and deliver much-needed elevational improvements.

"Overall, the scheme is expected to deliver notable improvements to the facades of the existing building. Officers welcome the opportunity to bring back into use a currently vacant and poor quality building in a particularly prominent location, and to support the potential for additional footfall within this part of the City Centre."
