Life saving equipment has been installed on a housing estate in Fegg Hayes following fundraising efforts.

Located right in the heart of the estate near the notice board, the defibrillator was formally unveiled last week. Campaigners have wanted the equipment installed after realising there wasn't one nearby and quickly raised funding from the local community and support from the Fegg Hayes Futures, Keepmoat, Innov8 Cleaning Solutions Ltd and Strata Windows Ltd.

The defibrillator is encased in a solar powered cabinet giving it greater flexibility in location due to the fact it doesn't need to be connected to the main, which also saves money.

The machines helps against sudden cardiac arrest, which kills approximately 100,000 people a year in the UK. Having a defibrillator less than three minutes away can greatly increase the chances of surviving a heart attack.

Heart attack survivor Vikki Mullock said: "It cost a small fortune but we did it. Thanks to the community spirit here at the estate. We have been able to source and fund this brand new defibrillator with help from the community and major sponsors."

The project was spearheaded by Lyn Mountford after realising the estate didn't have a dedicated defibrillator quickly sprung to action to rally the community.

Ward Councillor David Mountford commented: "Thanks everyone from the bottom of my heart for contributing to the defibrillator, it literally is a life saver. It strikes home to me how it's been a collaboration because we've had local businesses, charities, we've got residents and we've all come together to form a hub and we've done a positive thing."
