Plans for a brand-new 'traditional' convenience store on a busy road in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, have been approved by the city council.

Qwerty Print Solutions applied for permission to convert its vacant print workshop on Lichfield Street into a new retail unit back in January 2024.

The planning application stated: "The proposed retail use is that of a traditional convenience store.

"The proposal represents an exceptional opportunity for the council to support a sustainable scheme that would provide social and economic benefits.

"Key benefits include the provision of a key local facility to support the local and wider communities, the creation of jobs and other indirect benefits to the City's economy."

The shop will be open seven days a week and employ four staff (Nub News).

Stoke-on-Trent City Council approved these plans on Tuesday 21 May. An officers report says: "Considering the fact that the residential property is close to the town centre and a busy road junction and detached from the proposed retail building as well as within close proximity to other commercial units including a hot food takeaway and a public house, it is not anticipated that the comings and goings of a relatively small convenience store in terms of customers would be detrimental to the residential amenity of the neighbouring occupants and as such the proposed opening hours are considered acceptable.

"Further, there is on-site parking provision and the access to the site from the residential area of Harley Street is restricted by the installation of concrete bollards so parking outside of residential properties and the likely slamming of car doors and revving of engines outside of these properties would be limited.

"It is anticipated that customers would park within the on-site car park or the adjacent paid car park. Deliveries and collections would be limited to 3 times weekly and smaller vehicles would be used to enter site."

The new shop will be open 6am-11pm Monday to Saturday and 8am-10pm on Sundays and will employ two full-time and two part-time members of staff.
