Plans for a new residential care home for two children on a street in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, have been approved by the local council.

The residential property, on Park Road, is currently vacant but work is due to start on transforming the home into a care unit for two children between the ages of seven and 17.

The applicant, Upwards Care Solutions Ltd, operates over 30 children's homes in Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding areas.

According to a Planning Statement, "The young person will be provided with their own bedroom to ensure they feel safe and have their own personalised environment.

"This will promote a family residential home living setting while nurturing young people and ensuring their early life outcomes are achieved.

"The house will have two staff members 24/7 and the registered manager will be on site Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm."

The home will provide accommodation for two children and will have two staff members 24/7 (Nub News).

Letters were received from nearby residents raising concerns, for example one neighbour wrote "anti-social behaviour is already being experienced in the nearby park and the proposals could exacerbate this".

Another concern raised was an "increase in on street parking is an issue given the nearby public house and Port Vale football stadium".

Despite these worries, permission was granted by Stoke-on-Trent City Council on Monday 22 January.

The Officer's Report said: "The amended proposals mean that the two children would have a bedroom each on the first floor.

"The 3rd first floor bedroom would be used by one of the carers whilst the second carer would use the converted former dining room on the ground floor. This would also double up as the staff office.

"Although the proposed alterations to the window to this room to ensure privacy is safeguarded are not ideal, adequate light and outlook would still be received.

"Also, given this would not be the carer's permanent bedroom, this type of arrangement would be acceptable on this occasion."
