Man suspected of burglary 'made off in canoe' before being arrested in Stoke-on-Trent

A man suspected of burglary tried to make off from officers in a canoe on the canal before being arrested in Stoke-on-Trent yesterday (21 May).

Officers from Staffordshire Police spotted the 27-year-old suspect just after 3:30pm on Tuesday in Northwood Park as he is suspected to be linked to a number of burglaries and theft in the city.

The man made off from officers and got into a canoe on the canal but he was followed and then stopped by police.

The 27-year-old man, from Stoke-on-Trent has now been arrested on suspicion of burglary, vehicle interference, theft and he remains in custody.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "We're determined to target those involved in burglary, theft and robbery across Staffordshire, no matter where they go.

"By working proactively, we've been able to reduce the total number of burglaries, theft from the person and robberies by a combined 217 incidents from December 2023 to December 2024, when compared to the previous year.

"Action will continue against those blighting local people and businesses in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire."
