A man who assaulted and controlled a woman in Stoke-on-Trent has been jailed.

Andrew Kieron Simmons, 38, of Weston Coyney, was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday (24 November) after he was previously found guilty of assault by beating, engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour and intimidating a witness/juror.

He also admitted criminal damage valued to a property under £5,000.

Staffordshire Police explained that in April 2023, Simmons turned up at the victim's address and grabbed her by her hair.

He had engaged in coercive and controlling behaviour against the victim for nearly three years.

The day after the assault, he turned up at her home again and kicked at the front door, causing damage.

PC Fariyal Riaz, who worked on the case, said: "Simmons caused widespread physical and emotional harm and has rightfully been imprisoned for his crimes.

"I'm pleased that we've been able to deliver this result for the victim in this case who has shown tremendous courage throughout this investigation."

Staffordshire Police has also directed people impacted by domestic abuse who may need support to the New Era domestic abuse service, commissioned by the Staffordshire Commissioner alongside the County and City councils which can be found on the website here.
