Man charged after lorry driver dies in M6 crash near Stoke-on-Trent

A man has been charged after a lorry driver died in a collision on the M6 last month. 

Ghulam Haider, 22, from Dudley, is accused of causing death by dangerous driving and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance. 

Lorry driver Cliff Tamou, 58, from Wigan, had left the cab of his broken down HGV when he was killed in the collision between junctions 15 and 16 of the M6 shortly before 10pm on 27 February. 

Haider appeared at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Saturday and was remanded in custody and due to appear at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 7 April. 

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "A man has been charged following a fatal collision on the M6 in Stoke-on-Trent.

"We were called at 9.55pm on Thursday 27 February to reports of a collision involving a Toyota Avensis and a white MAN Truck HGV on the M6 junctions 15 and 16 southbound.

"Sadly, the driver of the HGV, 58-year-old Cliff Tamou, from Wigan, who was out of the HGV as it had broken down, died at the scene.

"The driver of the Toyota, Ghulam Haider, 22 years, from Dudley, who was injured in the collision, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance.

"He appeared at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Saturday 8 March and was remanded into custody.

"Haider is due to appear at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 7 April.

"Cliff's family continue to be supported by specialist officers." 

Mr Tamou's family described him as a devoted husband, father to six children and five grandchildren who had moved to the UK over 30 years ago from New Zealand and settled in the Wigan area.
