A major resurfacing programme has now begun on a major Stoke-on-Trent junction - the work is expected to take around eight weeks to complete.

Temporary lane closures are in place around Windmill Hill, Common Lane, Hilderstone Road and Sandon Road.

The scheme will see the whole of the A520 Windmill Hill roundabout resurfaced as well as improvements to kerbs, ironwork and drains.

Full closures of the whole roundabout and approaches will be needed on 11, 12, 20 and 21 of November, between 7pm and 6am.

The roadworks are causing long queues in all directions (Nub News).

Councillor Alec Sandiford said: "I am pleased that after months of continued pressure and efforts on your behalf, road repair work is finally set to begin in our area on the 21st of October. This has been long overdue, and I fully understand your frustration over the ongoing delays and broken promises regarding the maintenance of our roads.

"To get this issue addressed, I issued the County Council with a Section 56 notice under the Highways Act, followed by a formal complaint. This action has now ensured that the necessary repairs will take place, something that should have been done long ago.

"As your Borough Councillor, I have always worked hard to resolve issues and improve the quality of life for residents. However, many of the ongoing problems in our area, such as road repairs, are managed at the County level. This is one of the key reasons why I am standing in next May's County Council elections. I believe that with a hardworking Councillor representing you both on the Borough and at County level, we can achieve much more for our community."

Staffordshire County Council's cabinet member for strategic highways Mark Deaville said: "This is a major scheme on a busy junction which will see lasting improvements for many years to come.

"To carry out work safely, traffic management, including the overnight closures next month, will be needed and there will be inevitable disruption for which we apologise for.

"The team will make every effort to minimise the impact of the works, but we'd ask people to allow extra journey time if travelling through the junction.

"This scheme is further demonstration of our commitment to improve out road network across the county."
