The M6 near Stoke-on-Trent is closed after a lorry crashed into the central reservation overnight.

The northbound carriageway between junction 14 for Stafford and junction 15 for Stoke-on-Trent has been closed since around 10:30pm on Friday.

The single-vehicle crash has resulted in the lorry overturning and spilling diesel over the carriageway.

Staffordshire Police has confirmed there were no injuries and that the carriageway is likely to be closed for much of the morning for resurfacing.

All four lanes of the northbound carriageway will be resurfaced along with lane four of the southbound carriageway and some of the work is set to resume overnight on Saturday (9 August) .

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M6 in Staffordshire is closed northbound between J14 (Stafford) and J15 (Stoke on Trent) due to a serious collision involving an overturned lorry.

"All emergency services including Staffordshire Police are in attendance.

"National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.

"The vehicle has struck and damaged the concrete central reservation barrier and caused a significant spillage of diesel across the carriageway. As a result, it's expected that the road will be closed for some time.

"As a result of the spillage, all 4 lanes of the northbound carriageway and lane 4 of the southbound require resurfacing.

"Once recovery and clear-up is complete, contractors will 'plane' (remove the top layer of the tarmac) 3 lanes of the northbound carriageway. This will allow the road to re-open with reduced speeds until a full resurfacing operation can take place overnight tonight.

"Lane 4 of the southbound carriageway will also remain closed throughout the day until resurfacing can take place."
