Longport residents demand the removal of 'nuisance' caravans outside their homes

Neighbours are demanding the removal of two caravans from land outside their homes. The caravans have been on the fenced-off land – on Longport Road, in Longport – for weeks.

It comes as the land is already being used to feed goats. But neighbours say the caravans are devaluing their homes and attracting rats.

The land has been vacant ever since the demolition of a derelict house in the street in the past decade. Now some neighbours are calling on Stoke-on-Trent City Council to get the caravan shifted.

One couple said: "They are devaluing our house, it's a let-down on the street. There are rats on the site as well. It's just unhygienic for a residential street, it's embarrassing. We've complained to the council but nothing seems to happen. We've lived here for 30 years and now want to move because of it all, most people living along here are desperate for them to go."

Longport residents say the caravans are devaluing their homes and attracting rats (LDRS).

Neighbour Mark Watson added: "It has caused a lot of nuisance. It is chaotic – there have been kids screaming."

But Nikki McKenzie has defended the caravans and their occupants.

She said: "I love the goats, they are absolutely fabulous. The people in the caravans have been nothing but pleasant to us, I've had a chat with them. The council has sent a letter regarding anti-social behaviour – but there's no anti-social behaviour. They don't make any noise and when they are sitting outside the caravan they are sitting there like a family and not doing any harm to anybody. It's just people being snobby."

The LDRS have been unable to contact the owners of the caravans. They have contacted Stoke-on-Trent City Council for a statement regarding the current situation.
