A local Scout group will host a huge remembrance event in Longton Exchange Shopping Centre and Longton Victorian Market this year, with all proceeds going to a veterans charity.
Mandie Walters-Mitchell, Assistant Leader at St Gregory's Scout Group, told Stoke Nub News that the idea came about when the group was thinking about their next big project and decided to focus on remembrance.
"We always do something on the Saturday closest to Remembrance Day", said Mandie, "But this year we thought we'd turn it into an event because it's a sad time but also a celebration for the people who served back then."
The Scout group, based in Longton, have been busy recycling plastic bottles and making bird feeders out of them - decorated in a remembrance theme - and these will be sold on the day to raise money for Tri Services and Veterans Support Centre.
The Newcastle-based charity will have a stall at the first event on Wednesday 1 November and there will also be a craft stall where visitors can decorate their own bird feeders for a small donation.
There will be performances from local group, 'Uke n Sing', and war time songs will be played through the Precinct.
Mandie was also inspired by finding an image of her grandad, Wilfred, in the RAF to build a story of Longton during the war.
A wall of photos and stories will be displayed in a prominent location for people to look at on the day - if you would like to submit a photo and/or memory for the display, email [email protected].
Mandie said: "People have said what a wonderful idea it is because we've not only received pictures of people who served but also of people standing outside their houses at that time - it really builds a picture of Longton during the war."
Also on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 November, remembrance will take place at Longton Market where the British Legion, Tri Services and Veterans and St Gregory's Scouts will be in attendance.
