A nine-year-old girl is being recognised by a local charity for her "outstanding fundraising" after completing two sponsored haircuts.

Grace Stanton, from Leek, will be awarded with a certificate from hospice Douglas Macmillan and two plaques will displayed on a 'Supporter Recognition Tree' in the hospice reception area to celebrate the £1,356 she raised for the charity.

Grace first decided to cut her hair in 2022 following the death of her great-grandad Reg Carter who was cared for at home by the team at Dougie Mac.

She raised £568 for the charity before growing her hair to have it cut again in 2024 when she raised a further £788.

Grace said: "After my grandad died I wanted to raise money for the people who looked after him so I thought I would do a sponsored haircut.

"I grew it back and then had it cut again so I could raise some more money. I felt very proud of myself."

On both occasions, Grace donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust.

Grace's dad, Dean, said his grandad, who was in his 80s, received care at home from Dougie Mac nurses when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer having previously beaten skin cancer.

He said: "Grace wanted to do something to raise money for Dougie Mac and it was her idea to do a sponsored haircut.

"Initially she wanted to do a head shave but as her hair was down to her waist, we thought that was a bit too much, so we allowed her to have 12 inches cut off instead.

"Grace is super proud of herself, and, as parents, we are hugely proud of her for raising a total of £1,356."
