Last night (4 August), a number of crews attended a fire at Walleys Quarry in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Crews worked through the night to bring the fire under control and to minimise the impact on the local community.
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "We have now scaled back our fire presence. Two fire engines remain at the scene as we start damping down and dealing with hotpots.
"The main seats of the fire have been contained."
Station Manager Duncan Cole said: "Crews are continuing to work alongside site staff who are using diggers to lift sections of the waste, allowing firefighters to damp down remaining hot spots.
"We expect to be here for a few days yet to ensure all hot spots are fully extinguished so that the fire does not reignite."
At the height of the incident there were six fire engines, a water carrier and a high volume pump being used to tackle the fire.
Fire investigators will be at the site today to look into the cause of the fire.
