Life-saving defibrillator finally installed in Blurton - after three years of campaigning and negotiation
Life-saving equipment has finally been installed in Blurton after years of campaigning and negotiation over where it would be placed.
A long awaited defibrillator has finally been installed in Blurton. Located on the junction of Nashe Drive and Longton Hall Road and is ready to serve the community.
Campaigners have wanted to have the life saving equipment installed for over three years and quickly raised funding from the local community and support from the OneStop Shop; Silhouette; Dolven Funeral Services and St Paul's Church.
However, an agreement between the landowner and Longton Hall Community Association could not be reached, which delayed the project until a new location for the machine could be found.
The original plan wanted the equipment to be placed on the buildings, so it could have been connected easier.
The unit was installed last month and is solar powered which means it doesn't need to be connected to any building.
The equipment was installed by AED, which specialise in helping communities prepare for a sudden cardiac arrest, which kills approximately 100,000 people a year in the UK, by helping with fundraising and installation.
Their website reads: "AEDdonate is committed to improving survival from out of hospital cardiac arrests, supporting the placement and use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to local communities.
"We achieve this by giving communities the opportunity to fundraise or purchase an AED which can then be registered with your local Ambulance Trust for use in an Emergency."
Chair of Longton Hall Community Association, Robert Mountford said: "It is wonderful to have this community asset in place after a long fight to get it installed.
"We hope that it is never needed but if it is it will be a benefit to the people living on the Lundy Road estate and the Langland Drive estate and the people between Hollybush and Longon."
Councillor Lorraine Beardmore commented: "AED came up with this brilliant solar powered unit which was more expensive than the one we originally fundraised for but they have paid the additional costs for us.
"The estates on both sides have got a lot of older generation people living here and it's just really important and if it saves one person's life it is worth it."
