The Salvation Army helps people impacted by homelessness across Stoke-on-Trent, but Longton charity shop Manager Kerry Shenton, goes the extra mile to help the local community.

The Bennett Precinct shop works closely with The Salvation Army Church, Heathcote Road, to provide people in need with water aid, toiletries and food.

As part of an ongoing scheme, people impacted by homelessness can receive a voucher of up to £30 from the Church to spend in the Longton charity shop on bric-a-brac, clothing, shoes, or anything else they might need.

But even if people can't get a clothing voucher, Kerry says if someone in need approaches her, they will still receive help, support and donations.

She said: "Over Christmas I was coming down at 7am and giving out free hot drinks before I even opened the shop and started work - I didn't have to do that but I needed to make sure people were okay.

"I do it just because I like helping people, people know they can come in and chat to me.

"People might have a roof over their head but not clothes, food or toiletries and no other charity shop can give that stuff away, but Salvation Army is for the homeless so obviously people come to me."

Some mornings Kerry gets up to six people in need visit the shop for help, donations, or just a chat.

Kerry is currently working with small businesses in Longton to organise a day where people in need can receive a free haircut.

Caroline Street Hair & Beauty offered their support and together they are aiming to cut as many people's hair in one day as possible. The date for this event is not yet confirmed.

Longton Exchange Centre Manager, Chris Ward, said: "As a community shopping centre, I am always looking for ways to play our part in supporting the people in it.

"When Kerry, Manageress of the Salvation Army approached me I instantly wanted to support her in her work.

"Anyone who knows Kerry will know of her willingness to help others, as a centre we are extremely proud to be supporting this initiative."

Salvation Army have charity shops in Hanley and Longton (Sarah Garner).
