Stoke-on-Trent City Council's environmental health team is carrying out a health and safety investigation at Waterworld following the death of a four-year-old girl yesterday.

The city council has this afternoon (5 August) confirmed the environmental health team are now conducting a "full health and safety investigation" at the waterpark alongside Staffordshire Police.

Cllr Steve Watkins, the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, today issued a statement paying tribute to the girl who died on behalf of the city.

"We were all devastated to hear of the death of a four-year-old girl at Waterworld," he said.

"This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts are with her family and loved ones."

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 4:20pm on Monday (4 August) to reports of a girl in a "critical condition" and unconscious near the Lagoon area of the waterpark.

She received treatment from lifeguards and paramedics at the scene and was taken to the Royal Stoke whilst undergoing "life-saving treatment" en route. She died in hospital on Monday evening.

Waterworld has been closed today (5 August).

A spokesperson for Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: "Stoke-on-Trent City Council can confirm it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a four-year-old girl at Waterworld.

"The council's environmental health team are working with the police and the privately-run venue to undertake a full health and safety investigation."

Staffordshire Police confirmed the girl's family are being supported by specially trained officers.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has knowledge of it is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 460 of 4 August.
