Police and fire crews responded to a car fire on the A50 in North Staffordshire this morning (Thursday 24 September).

Staffordshire Police was called at 6.50am to the A50 westbound to the Blythe Bridge area close to the Meir tunnel following reports of a vehicle fire.

Officers attended the scene alongside Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, where a car was found on fire.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police: "A car had broken down and was alight.

"We informed National Highways who closed the road while firefighters attended the scene."

Firefighters put out the fire and the road was later reopened.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "A broken down vehicle was found involved in fire.

Two crews attended and used a hose reel jet to put the fire out.

"The fire was later deemed an accidental ignition as a result of an engine malfunction.

"We left the scene at 7.50am."
