Firefighters were called to tackle a fire inside a derelict building in Stoke-on-Trent on Saturday (15 November).

Crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue were called at 3pm to Market Street, Longton, following reports of smoke coming from a derelict building.

A small fire was found on the ground floor which was extinguished using a hose reel jet.

Nobody was reported injured.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue have explained that an investigation into the cause of the fire will take place.

In response to the fire, Dr Allison Gardner MP for Stoke-on-Trent South, said: "The fire in the derelict building on Market Street yesterday is yet another deeply troubling incident.

"While I am relieved that no one was injured, my patience on this issue is wearing extremely thin.

"This is not the first - or even the second - time in the past year that our community has been put at risk because certain absentee landlords refuse to meet even the most basic responsibilities for their properties.

"I have been in close contact with the police since the incident, and I expect a full and urgent multi-agency review of how such sites are being managed and monitored.

"It is wholly unacceptable for landlords to allow buildings to fall into dangerous disrepair, leaving the people of Longton to shoulder the consequences of their negligence.

"I will continue to push the Council to hold these landlords to account and to use every power available to ensure properties in our area are properly secured, maintained, and no longer allowed to pose a threat to public safety.

"My constituents in Longton have been more than patient - this cannot carry on."
