Emergency gas work which has caused a small section of Birches Head Road to be closed has caused 'mayhem'.

The section of road between Fairhaven Grove and Bradford Terrace has been closed since Wednesday and residents who just want work to finish haven't been told when the ordeal will be over with.

Motorists are being diverted down narrow terraced streets which is causing problems.

Fairhaven Grove resident Julie Richardson said : "It is a nightmare, there have been cars cutting through and lorries coming up and down. It gets worse when school starts and finishes and when people finish work and park on the pavement."

Residents have also reported that drivers are ignoring the one-way requirement on some roads and that it is an accident waiting to happen.

Sue Gray says she nearly witnessed a crash when somebody was leaving their drive.

Residents have reported that drivers are ignoring the one-way requirement on some roads in the area (LDRS).

She said: "Yesterday there was nearly a crash outside my house when someone was leaving their drive and a car tried to go around them. The amount of yelling that was going on is horrific.

"Why is it here, it is causing mayhem, it is a nightmare, it has been here since Wednesday and it is absolutely horrific, it is causing a rat-run."

Francesca Pheasey says that this morning she has already heard seven car horns due to drivers getting road rage. Ms Pheasey said: "Everyone has been driving on the pavements, even the window cleaner said it's been busy down here. You can't even try and get on or off your drive because there are that many cars coming down and quite a few of them don't go very slow."

Despite no official word to residents on when the emergency gas repairs will be finished, road works monitoring site One.Network says that the permission has been granted until 25 September for "utility repair and maintenance works". This potentially means that residents have to put up with the chaos for another week.

Ann Tottle only moved into Fairhaven Grove two days ago and says she must have picked two busiest days on the planet. She adds: "With the road being closed it is just constant and there is lots of building work on this street and everyone is being diverted here. I don't know how long it's going to stay but I think normally it's a quite quiet place but they've got to do the work and then they'll be gone."

Cadent Gas who are carrying out the repair have been contacted for comment. However, at this time no response has been received.
