Double yellow lines to be installed outside busy Stoke-on-Trent school
Parents picking up their children from a busy Stoke-on-Trent school will soon have to find somewhere else to wait, much to the relief of residents living on the street.
Palmers Green in Harthill could soon have measures put in place to stop people waiting on the road during busy school hours.
The measures will make it harder for those parking outside Harpfield Primary Academy, however, there is a school car park for those wishing to use it and a lollipop person to assist with crossing the road. The traffic notice, which is still in consultation, would, if implemented, prohibit waiting on the road between 8.30am-9.30am and 3pm-4pm Monday to Friday.
Residents living on the street say they are sick to death of the parking and that nothing seems to work despite multiple efforts. The resident who did not want to be named said: "Nothing seems to stop them parking there, they have blocked the drive, parked on the grass. When you do complain to them they give you loads of abuse.
"At the end of the day it could be dangerous with all the kids around here. They've got a car park which is only ever half full because parents think its too much of a walk."
However others warned that depending on where the lines are placed could shift the problem further down the street which could have a greater impact on the residents. Jenny Taylor said: "My personal view is that it would not work. Are parents really not going to park there?
"It is good there is a car park provided but it is only busy twice a day for a short period of time. It does seem slightly over the top and might mean cars park just to avoid the lines."
The consultation ends 4 December anyone wishing to support or object to the implementation of the no waiting zone should contact Stoke-on-Trent City Council or email [email protected], quoting reference: MB/NM/TRO9/2023.
A spokesperson from Harpfield Primary Academy said: "We know that parking is an issue locally and we have a very busy road nearby. We encourage parents to use the car park opposite our school and we will continue to encourage parents to make use of this car park."
Cllr Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for city pride, enforcement and sustainability advised: "The elected member and local residents in Palmers Green have voiced concerns with the indiscriminate parking associated with parents and visitors to the nearby Harpfield Primary Academy. The current parking activity is damaging the grass verges, obstructing driveways, and reducing driver/pedestrian visibility within Palmers Green.
"The City Council upon assessment feels that it is expedient to promote this traffic order in the interests of road safety within the locale of the Harpfield Primary Academy. The proposals are currently being consulted on, and once the statutory response period has ceased, a decision will be made on implementation based on any representations that may be received."
