Consultations have started over introducing double yellow lines on a busy North Staffordshire road.

Houses on Lightwood Road in Florence could soon be forced to park elsewhere as Stoke-on-Trent City Council want to introduce double yellows line along a stretch of the road, preventing residents from parking.

The busy road which connects the A50 to Rough Close is normally busy and residents report that it is not unusual for cars to pass by at speeds upwards of 40 miles per hour. The road is also used on diversionary routes when parts of the A50 are closed which dramatically increases the amount of traffic travelling down the road.

Residents have reported that many cars have started parking on the pavement which has become an obstacle for pedestrians with many having to go on the road because the pavement is blocked.

Resident Dothorthy Wright who will have the double yellow lines painted in front of her house said it is a good thing and a few years ago there was a consultation on introducing traffic calming measures on the road.

She mentioned that a lot of the time pedestrians, particularly those with pushchairs or mobility scooters struggle to get past the parked cars forcing them onto the road. Mrs Wright said: "The traffic comes that fast up and down here, people are parking and people can't get past because people are parking on the pavement. It's dangerous because people are having to go out into the road and it's a very busy road.

Some residents also said that some of the residents along the street are running car businesses from their address and are parking cars on the road because their drive is full. The consultation ends 4 December anyone wishing to support or object to the implementation of the no waiting zone should contact Stoke-on-Trent City Council or email [email protected], quoting reference: DF/NM/TRO11/2023.

The double yellow lines will extend only a small stretch of the road between 400 and 440 and does not reach as far as the Florence Sports and Social. In a statement Councillor Amjid Wazir said that informal consultations have already taken place with local residents submitting a petition requesting lines be put in place.

Cllr Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for city pride, enforcement and sustainability advised: A safety scheme has been developed for Lightwood Road following concerns with vehicular speed. The scheme has gone through informal consultation with local residents, and some local residents have submitted a petition to request double yellow lines outside their properties to enable improved visibility and to alleviate the indiscriminate parking that occurs from the nearby Florence Sports and Social complex once their car parking facility is full.

"The City Council upon assessment feels that it is expedient to promote this traffic order in the interests of road safety within the locale of the Florence Sports & Social facility. The proposals are currently being consulted on, and once the statutory response period has ceased, a decision will be made on implementation based on any representations that may be received."
