Plans have been lodged to replace an ageing and disused warehouse in Stoke-on-Trent with a 'fit for purpose' distribution centre.
The former Pets at Homes warehouse in Trentham Lakes has been out of since the company moved to a new facility near Stafford last year.
A planning application to bulldoze the existing building and build a new, 15,283sqm warehouse in its place has now been submitted to Stoke-on-Trent City Council. The proposed building's future occupier has not been revealed, nor how many jobs could be created at the new facility.
But the application says the development, off Stanley Matthews Way, will 'support employment growth' and could act 'as a catalyst for further regeneration'. In addition to the main warehouse building, the development would include a three-level 'multi-storey van deck', with 689 van storage bays.
The application states: "The existing site was previously occupied by Pets at Home and was their national distribution centre. It has however, been vacant for some time. The previous occupier relocated to a more suitable facility due to the existing no longer being fit-for purpose.
"Because of this the existing unit has fallen into a state of disrepair and is deemed to have reached the end of its useful economic lifespan.
"The proposal represents a high-quality development and represents a substantial investment to the area. In particular, the development will help to promote and support employment growth and stimulate economic investment to the area, cohesive with regional and local aspirations.
"It is anticipated that this development could act as a catalyst for further regeneration to create a number of new jobs and investment for the local community."
The planning application has been submitted by Jersey-registered firm Amatrix Stoke PropCo Limited. The proposed development will include 217 parking spaces, a reduction on the 360 currently on the site.
Planners at the city council are expected to make a decision on the proposals by February.
