There is disruption at Stoke-on-Trent station today (1 July) due to 'damaged overhead electric wires' near Kidsgrove.

Northern expects all of its services to and from Stoke-on-Trent to be cancelled for the rest of the day, as they will start and end in Macclesfield. Some Avanti West Coast services have also been cancelled.

National Rail says the disruption to services is due to "damaged overhead electric wires in the Kidsgrove area" and partial repairs took place yesterday evening to allow some lines to reopen after they were fully blocked.

A statement on National Rail's website reads: "Yesterday evening, the overhead electric wires were damaged in the Kidsgrove area. Partial repairs have been completed, allowing some lines to reopen from Macclesfield towards Stoke-on-Trent.

"Whilst some lines remain closed, Northern services will run between Macclesfield and Manchester Piccadilly only.

"Avanti West Coast services running from London Euston towards Manchester Piccadilly will divert via Alsager / Crewe.

"Disruption is expected until the end of the day."

"Network Rail will complete final repairs overnight to allow a normal service to resume tomorrow, 2 July."

Northern Rail said: "Customers are advised that they can use their Northern tickets on CrossCountry services at no extra cost between Manchester Piccadilly and Stoke on Trent in both directions until the end of the day.

"Customers are advised that they can use their Northern tickets on Avanti services at no extra cost between Manchester Piccadilly and Stoke on Trent in both directions until the end of the day.

"Please note this disruption impacts all train operators on the route to Stoke on Trent and services are subject to cancellations and delays."
