A section of the A500 was blocked this morning as Staffordshire Police responded "following concern for the welfare of a man."

Traffic was stopped in both directions between the A52 and the A50 earlier this morning "due to a police lead incident".

National Highways explained that the incident has now been cleared and the A500 has opened in both directions.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "We were called just before 6.40am today (Wednesday 18 March) to a bridge on Glebe Street in Stoke-on-Trent, following concern for the welfare of a man.

"Officers attended the scene and National Highways closed a section of the A500 while we worked to safeguard the man.

"He was brought to safety and taken to hospital.

"The closure has now been lifted."
