Councillor Majid Khan was selected as the city's latest Lord Mayor during Stoke-on-Trent City Council's annual council meeting on Thursday (25 May).
Councillor Khan was first elected as a Labour councillor in Tunstall in 2010 and was re-elected the following year to represent his current Etruria and Hanley ward.
The father-of-five is no stranger to the role of First Citizen, having previously served as Lord Mayor in 2014-2015.
Councillor Khan is one of very few councillors to have held the title more than once.
Councillor Khan said: "I really enjoyed my time as Lord Mayor in 2014 and this time around I am looking forward to spending time in the community, doing more of what I enjoy, meeting local residents and encouraging businesses to come and set up in Stoke-on-Trent.
"I plan on meeting with local organisations and learning more about the support they are providing for our residents, particularly around transport, fuel poverty and mental health.
"I am also really keen to welcome local people to the Civic Centre and the Lord Mayor's Parlour and hope to get lots of support from the local business community for my chosen charities."
Councillor Khan will raise money for Savana, which provides free counselling to victims of sexual violence, Stoke-on-Trent Aiming High, which provides a wide variety of activities to children and young people with disabilities, and Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank during his time in office.
He added: "The charities I have chosen to support are small, local charities who are doing a really good job and I am confident that the money we raise over the next 12 months will make a huge difference to them and enable them to continue their brilliant work."
Councillor Khan came to the UK from Pakistan in 1971. He moved to Stoke-on-Trent in 1983 to set up a catering business. Married to Shahida, he has two sons called Mosin and Shazad, three daughters called Samaria, Tahira and Sameeya and eight grandchildren.
During his time as Lord Mayor, Councillor Khan will be supported by each of his daughters who will share the role of Lady Mayoress.
