Stoke-on-Trent City Council is planning to build 46 affordable flats on vacant land in the city.

A planning application has been submitted by the council for the "erection of 46 no. 100% affordable flats with associated parking, landscaping and infrastructure" at the former Doris Robinson Court in Meir.

Doris Robinson Court was previously sheltered housing for older persons; this use ended in 2020 and the building was demolished in 2024.

The new plans propose 30 one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom flats, all of which would be available for "affordable social rent".

A Planning Statement, submitted as part of the application, says: "The development proposals are situated on previously development land associated with the former Doris Robinson Court which comprised 33 flats of sheltered accommodation, but which has subsequently been demolished.

"The proposals provide an opportunity to deliver high-quality affordable housing for older persons within a sustainable, urban location on vacant, previously developed land.

"As part of the development proposals, covered cycle parking provision for up to 4 cycles will be provided within the site for the use of residents and staff.

The flats are designed to meet the needs of the elderly who wish to live independently (Image via planning application).

"The development proposals retain the existing 21 unallocated car parking spaces located on the adopted highway. This unallocated parking provision will be supplemented by the provision of 11 car parking spaces located within the north-west corner of the application site.

"The proposed flats are designed to meet the needs of the elderly, who wish to live an independent life, but with emergency care if required."

The full planning application can be viewed here.
