A consultation has been launched over the future of a Stoke-on-Trent dog enclosure. Introduced as part of a pilot scheme now the City Council wants to know if it should be made permanent.

The dog enclosure at Burslem Park was introduced in 2018 following a petition calling for an area in which dogs could be let off the lead. At the same time there were also reports of dogs fighting in the park.

The LDRS walked around the park speaking to dog walkers and getting their view. At the time of visiting the park nobody was using the dedicated dog space however it was reported that it is well used.

The City Council wants to know if the dog enclosure should be made permanent (LDRS).

Burslem resident Marjorie Davies commented: "There are one or two dogs I know of that have been killed, there are a lot of irresponsible people about now. I don't use the dog space, I don't feel comfortable.

"I'm very wary around like I say some let their dogs off and even if something happens they'll shrug their shoulders and say accidents happen. I never use it, I never have but people do. People should have the choice to use it."

Ann Barnes said she frequently walks her dog around the park and said all parks should have a dedicated dog space. She added: "I've seen it used frequently. I will say it's a great idea if you want to let your dog off and let it run about without interfering with others. It is something that all parks should have really."

Park Estate resident John Costello said : "Even though some don't use the dog compound it's got to be a good idea for anyone that does. You've got access and you can shut the gate, so it's secure and people can wait and wait until you come out. It's a safe area so it's got to be a good thing. If you want your dog to run around it's better that it's in a confined area.

Following the end of the pilot scheme the current fenced off area could be made permanent if residents believe that the enclosure has made a positive impact.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the consultation should email Stoke-on-Trent City Council at [email protected] before the end of today (Monday 29th January).
