Concerned neighbours slam parents for "chaotic" parking outside Stoke-on-Trent school

Neighbours have slammed parents for chaotic parking on the narrow roads outside a Stoke-on-Trent school – with fears children could be hurt.
Glebe Academy, in Park Place, Fenton accepts children from nursery to year six and has approximately 232 pupils walking through its gates every day. That means roads around the school reportedly often become gridlocked at drop-off and pick-up times.
With legitimate places to park taken, parents regularly park on double yellow lines or opposite one another, making it difficult to negotiate, according to Fenton mum Maria Lozinca.
Maria, who recently moved to the area, said: "They double park most of the time, so in the mornings we struggle to get out. They don't respect the double yellows – it's a nightmare to drive and pass around them. It's overwhelming at times.
"I've watched people open their car doors with kids jumping around and I'm, like, 'oh my God', because they've nearly been hit. The problem is there is nowhere for them to park. If you have multiple children, it's harder for them to walk."
The school has cones outside the front of the building preventing parents parking directly in front of the school. There is also a sign which warns parents "don't park here". However, many reportedly ignore it.
Sasha Simmonds has a niece and nephew at Glebe Academy. She says last year there was an incident where her niece was nearly injured.
In her own words she said: "Kids when they've finished school are full of beans and run about telling you what they've done in the day. One day last year someone parked on double yellows just opened a car door when she was walking past. Luckily, I managed to grab her back.
"I phoned the school after the incident and asked them what they are going to do about the parking and they told me 'at the minute we are doing all we can do'. One day a week they've got cones out on the yellow lines."
Neighbour Susan Cox says she needs a new kitchen, but has to get it delivered during the summer holidays due to cars parked outside her house.
She said: "It's inconvenient a lot of the time but they've got nowhere else to park really. It is difficult if you are trying to get deliveries or anything.
"I've just ordered a new kitchen and I've got to wait until the summer holidays because they wouldn't get a vehicle down here to deliver it. If you come across during the day time you'll see there are no spaces here at all, but I think you get that anywhere."
A spokesperson for the school said: "The streets around our academy are small and congested. We will be expanding our car park in the near future and have had a lot of success with the parking buddies and cones system. This has ensured parents are parking responsibly at pick-up and drop-off time.
"A parent has once made us aware of a child having possibly been nudged by a car on their way home over a year ago – this was reported to the police and school.
"The safety of our children is our number-one concern. It is true that there is a lot of traffic and we have a high level of supervision for children entering and exiting the academy and coaches.
"We have organised support from our local police community support officers to help us ensure everyone is safe at pick-up and drop-off time.
"We have a breakfast club and after-school club to help stagger the drop off; and a walk-to-school initiative, which is growing in popularity. We continue to work closely with the council, our local MP, and the authorities to keep our children safe."
