Stoke-on-Trent City Council is launching the Love Your Street campaign today (Stoke-on-Trent City Council).

More enforcement action and CCTV coverage are planned at six fly-tipping hotspots across the city as part of a crackdown on illegal dumping.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council is launching the Love Your Street campaign today (July 30) at locations in Hanley, Fenton, Burslem, Tunstall, Stoke and Shelton where streets have averaged 30 reported incidents of illegal dumping in just a year.

The authority is spending £46,000 funding secured from Defra (The Government's Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) on eight new mobilised CCTV cameras. There will also be more signage and enforcement action during the campaign and residents will be supported to dispose of household waste appropriately.

The council will spend £46k of funding on eight new mobilised CCTV cameras (LDRS).

The campaign will focus on the following areas until the end of September:

  • Portland Street, Hanley
  • Goldenhill Road, Fenton
  • Lindley Street, Burslem
  • Cauldon Road, Shelton
  • King William Street, Tunstall
  • Fletcher Road, Stoke

Speaking ahead of the launch, Councillor Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for city pride, enforcement and sustainability said: "We have made no secret of wanting residents to take pride in where they live. Ownership starts as soon as someone decides to act inconsiderably.

"It's now time to stop, think and take action. The amenities available for all residents to dispose of waste legally have never been easier.

"While we are targeting these streets, we want the rest of the city to also take action. It takes a few minutes out of your day to do the right thing, and put rubbish in the appropriate bin, or arrange for a bulky waste collection.

There were over 3,000 fly-tipping incidents reported in 2022/23 (LDRS).

"We are serious about penalising those who continue to blight the city, and action will be taken – please do the right thing. We have pledged to make the city safer, cleaner and greener, building empowered communities, conserving our environment and working together to clean up our city and communities, and that starts on our doorsteps."

The latest crackdown follows the Illegal Dumping in Our Towns campaign which launched in June 2023. This saw environmental teams clear 8,400 incidents of illegal dumping and issue over 3,500 fixed penalty notices.

In Portland Street fly-tipped waste in recent months has included mattresses, shopping trolleys and sofas. Illegal dumping has taken place despite signs warning against fly-tipping.

Portland Street resident Jacquie Morris said: "I go out every morning around 6.30am because I've got dogs to walk. If there is rubbish in that alleyway, nine times out of ten you see rats scuttling around.

"For a city centre road it's diabolical. I'm sick of reporting it."
