A section of a busy road in Stoke-on-Trent remains closed following a fire yesterday (7 April).

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to Newcastle Street, Middleport, yesterday after a fire broke out inside a three-storey building.

The road is closed from the turning for Newport Street and motorists are being diverted.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Hose reel jets were used to extinguish the fire and a man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

"Fire investigators later deemed the fire to be caused accidentally.

"Road closures remain in place on Newcastle Street between Dale Street and Newport Street and we are advising motorists to avoid the area and look for alternate routes."
