Goldenhill residents were in shock when a billboard advertising the local oatcake shop was covered up. Now the billboard advertises Goldenhill Mini-Market instead of The Wild Oatcake which it had done for months.

The original Murray Street sign was installed in May when local oatcake shop owner, Slim Chadwick asked the owner whether he could repurpose the billboard. After this he commissioned a local artist to install the new advert for The Wild Oatcake.

However, now it has been completely covered up. Owner Slim said he first became aware that the new mini-market was taking over the sign after local residents contacted him on social media and were concerned.

Mr Chadwick said: "I'd gone home and people started messaging me on Facebook and sending me photographs of the sign half covered up. It was a shabby board that nobody had used for 15 years and we asked the owner if we could use it and he said 'yeah use it'.

Slim Chadwick took over oatcake shop over a year ago and commissioned a local artist to install the advert (LDRS).

"So it was a bit of a surprise when we started getting messages from people and photographs of it half covered up. We are also surprised by the support people have shown us. It's very nice that as a community they have supported us but we should be welcoming all businesses to the area because it's all good."

Slim says there are no hard feelings over the sign however, a heads up would have been appreciated. He also says he has not heard from the owner of the billboard over the ongoing situation.

Slim took over the oatcake shop over a year ago. He rebranded it from Goldenhill Oatcakes to The Wild Oatcake to reflect the fact his oatcakes are yeast and dairy free and use just four ingredients – water, flour, oats and salt.

The Wild Oatcake in Goldenhill is located at 807 High Street Goldenhill and is open everyday from 6am and open until 10pm Thursday to Sunday. Goldenhill Mini-Market have said they had permission from the landlord before any work was carried out.
