Staff and residents at a care home in North Staffordshire were joined by a group of owls as part of the RSPB Big Bird Watch.

Residents at Shoemaker Place - run by Borough Care - were introduced to four breeds of owl and even had the opportunity to hold one of the birds at an event last week.

Pupils from Yarlet School came along for the talk from Vale Royal Falconry with the youngsters and residents sharing their mutual delight of seeing the birds of prey up close and personal.

Sharon Parkes, customer relations manager at Shoemaker Place said: "At Shoemaker Place we consistently strive to organise events and activities that are interesting and exciting for our residents to participate in."

She added: "The visit we had from Vale Royal Falconry was fabulous, both residents and visiting pupils from Yarlet school loved seeing the birds and getting the opportunity to hold the Little Owl.

"We have a lovely relationship with our local schools and it is always a delight to have the children in our homes for the many intergenerational activities we hold."

The RSPB Big Bird Watch invites people to observe, record and learn about the various bird species which they see, while contributing valuable data to the RSPB's national conservation efforts.
