Many people are preparing for winter, whether that be switching to their winter wardrobe, or buying presents ready for Christmas, but many won't have stopped to consider whether their vehicle is ready for winter. Swansway Motor Group offer advice on winter tyres.

The winter weather can cause all manner of difficulties for motorists, fortunately, there are ways to prepare your car, one of which is winter tyres.

Whilst winter tyres are not a legal requirement in the UK - unlike areas of Europe, such as Finland and Sweden where all vehicles must fit them for the duration of the coldest season, or in Germany or Spain, where suitable tyres or chains must be fitted whenever road signs instruct - it's certainly important to contemplate investing in them.

Swansway Motor Group advise that motorists should already be thinking about switching to winter tyres as the temperature begins to drop. There's no hard or fast rule as to exactly when drivers should swap from summer tyres to winter tyres, but when temperatures start to drop below 7C, is when winter tyres come into their own, maximising control in slippery and wet conditions.

Motorists in the UK may wonder whether winter tyres are worth the investment. Swansway Motor Group tell us that the main difference between normal tyres and winter tyres is the dread depth, this difference in tread depth can reduce stopping distances on ice and snow by half. Meaning that they are beneficial in ensuring better safety for drivers and their passengers when the ice and snow become less of a winter wonderland and more of a driving challenge.

Another benefit that comes with swapping to winter tyres, is that having two sets of tyres to alternate between in a 12-month period means that each set will last longer.
