This is an exciting opportunity to join our expanding catering / retail department at Newcastle College. Working in the College shop, duties include serving customers, cash and electronic transaction handling, stock replenishment & control, cleaning and ensuring a tidy working environment for our students and staff.

The ability to effectively work unsupervised will also be required during the crossover of shifts. To be successful, you will have previous experience of working in a retail environment, knowledge of cash / electronic transactions and stock rotation / control and have a flexible approach to your working hours.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

· To ensure the prompt and efficient service to shop customers.

· To maintain high standards of service to all customers.

· To ensure high standards of stock display and presentation.

· To have responsibility for opening and closing the College shop in the absence of the shop supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience:

· Has a good standard of general education.

· Has previous retail experience in a similar customer service environment

· Level 2 Food hygiene.

· Has a proven knowledge of cash handling / electronic transactions.

· Works with accuracy and pays attention to detail.

· A flexible approach to working hours

· Has a willingness to undertake further training if required

Background The College Shop provides a range of goods including stationery, sandwiches and confectionery for sale to both staff and students. The specific duties of the post holder are: · To ensure a prompt and efficient service to shop customers. · To maintain high standards of service to all customers. · To ensure high standards of stock display and rotation and presentation. · Checking of deliveries and reporting any short or overs. · Using the College's online stock ordering system. · To ensure that all security policies and the requirements of the College's Financial Regulations are adhered to. · To observe the requirements of the College's health and safety procedures. · To ensure appropriate lone working policies & procedures are adhered to during early and late shift patterns. · To have responsibility for opening and closing the College shop in the absence of the shop supervisor. · To undertake any other reasonable duties which may arise from time to time and which are commensurate with the post. · Checking deliveries and reporting any shortfalls or over stock orders. Person Specification To be a person who: 1. Has a good standard of general education. 2. Has previous retail experience in a similar customer service environment. 3. Level 2 Food hygiene (Desirable). 4. Has a proven knowledge of cash handling / electronic transactions.(epos system). 5. Experience in computerised stock ordering system. 6. Works with accuracy and pays attention to detail. 7. A flexible approach to working hours. 8. Has a willingness to undertake further training if required. Salary and Conditions: All staff are employees of the College Corporation who determine conditions of service in negotiation with recognised trade unions. Your salary will be reviewed annually by the Corporation and this will include an annual assessment of the affordability of any cost of living increase. The salary is payable on 27th of each calendar month or the working day before if it falls on a non-working day by direct credit transfer into a bank/building society of your choice. It is the policy of the College to approach referees of candidates short-listed for interview if consent has been given on the application form. It is also College policy to approach a candidate's current or most recent employer for a reference. Where the candidate is working in the education sector a reference will be sought from the appropriate Principal, Headteacher or Vice Chancellor. The appointment is subject to satisfactory references and appropriate checks with the Criminal Records Bureau together with a probationary period of twelve months. The post is pensionable and a deduction is made from salary. Appointments are provisional until medical clearance is obtained, and this may require the person appointed to pass a medical examination.
