Nouvelle Vague is Richard Linklater's playful and poignant love letter to cinema, reimagining the making of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, in an exuberant exploration of the youthful rebellion and creative chaos that shaped the French New Wave.
Newcomer Guillaume Marbeck plays Godard at the dawn of his career, directing Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch) and Jean-Paul Belmondo (Aubry Dullin) as star-crossed lovers, filming with unorthodox spontaneity on the streets of Paris.
Working alongside other key players, friends and creative collaborators like Francois Truffaut – who's shooting The 400 Blows – Claude Chabrol, Roberto Rossellini, Jean-Pierre Melville and Jacques Rivette, the pressure on Godard to produce a masterpiece is impossible to escape.
Shot in luminous black and white and brimming with stylistic nods to the era - cue marks, jagged edits, handheld energy - Richard Linklater's film doesn't simply recount the making of Breathless, it channels its spirit.
French dialogue with English subititles.
