Deaf (12A, subtitles)

A deaf woman navigates identity and motherhood in this poignant drama. Winner of the Panorama Audience Award for Best Feature Film at this year's Berlin Film Festival, Eva Libertad's film is a delicate yet assured debut feature about a woman on the cusp of motherhood.

Told in a mixture of spoken Spanish and sign language, this tender drama follows Ángela (played by Libertad's sister, the deaf artist Miriam Garlo) and her hearing partner Héctor (Álvaro Cervantes) as they embark on parenthood for the first time.

But nestled within the excitement lies trepidation. Will the baby be deaf like her mother or hearing like her father? Anxious that her daughter will be subject to the alienation she often feels, Ángela is confronted with long-held questions about her own identity. Deaf is a deeply empathetic film which explores, with great complexity, the experience of raising a child while deaf in a hearing world.

Both the central performances are extraordinary, especially Garlo, in a many-layered turn which moves far beyond sentimental clichés.

Spain (Spanish dialogue and sign language with English subtitles), 2025, 99mins
