Two fifteen-year-old girls attempt to travel to Syria seeking freedom and new lives in this compassionate and thought-provoking road film.
Best friends Doe and Muna experience a constant barrage of racism and bullying at school, alongside tumultuous home lives. But through it all they have each other. Disillusioned and desperate to forge their own paths, they set out a long and risky cross-country journey to reach a community they think will appreciate them.
Brides is acclaimed theatre director and playwright Nadia Fall's emotive first feature. It is a bold, empathetic and spirited film fully embracing the young women's perspective, intricately exploring girlhood, faith and friendship. Told with compassion and urgency, it's a gripping story of loyalty, lost innocence and the quiet desperation that drives radical choices.
Newcomers Ebada Hassan and Safiyya Ingar's performances are outstanding, offering layered and truthful performances that convincingly convey an authentic friendship dynamic.
