Work began yesterday (13 February) on a brand-new £1.1 million 3G training pitch at Roe Lane Playing Fields in Clayton, home of Newcastle Town Football Club

The new pitch has been made possible due to a £639,588 grant from the Premier League, The FA and the government's Football Foundation.

This new facility means that Newcastle Town will have a reliable space to train and a space for children and young people to make use of.

Newcastle Town FC chairman, Gavin Appleby, told Stoke Nub News: "The pitch will make a difference to boys and girls, young adults and elderly participants of football and multi sports from the Newcastle-under-Lyme and surrounding areas.

"The pitch will be open to current Newcastle Town teams, local clubs and sporting organisations from the local area and community.

"This is a really proud moment for the club and I have to admit to feeling very emotional at the prospect of the difference this is going to make."

The pitch is expected to be completed in May (Newcastle Town FC).

Robert Sullivan, chief executive of the Football Foundation, said: "This grant award to Newcastle Town FC towards developing a 3G facility is great news for the local community.

"It will support people's ability to play our national game locally and therefore help unlock football's many benefits to physical and mental wellbeing. That's why we're committed to working with our partners at the Premier League, The FA and government to transform the face of grassroots football facilities in this country."

The new pitch will also help enhance the club's offer for female and disabled players, alongside providing recreational opportunities and volunteer, match official and coach support.

The work on the new 3G pitch is expected to be completed in May and it will be officially opened at an open day in June.
