Various 'safeguarding works' are planned for a Grade II-listed market in Stoke-on-Trent, to prevent further deterioration and degradation of the building.

Burslem Market, on Queen Street, was constructed in 1879 but has been mostly vacant since 2003 following a ceiling collapse.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has submitted a planning application for "safeguarding works to building including installation of temporary netting and protection within market hall, partial repairs to roof and gutters and removal of internal walls and floors within 34 Queen Street".

A Heritage Statement submitted as part of the application says: "The Market Hall stands as a testament to Victorian-era craftsmanship and architectural significance, embodying historical value in the local landscape.

The market has been mostly closed since 2003 although the flats and commercial units remain occupied (Image via planning application).

"The safeguarding project aims which are the subject of this application are to prevent further deterioration and degradation of the building and safeguard the premises in anticipation of a long-term use of The Burslem Market premises.

"The proposed works will ensure the building can provide a long-term sustainable internal environment in readiness for use by the public, staff and other building occupiers once future strategic funding is in place to comprehensively refurbish the building."

An application form confirmed that work would take place between the hours of 8am-10am, 12pm-2pm and 4.30pm-6pm Monday to Friday and 8am-12pm on Saturdays.

The full planning application can be viewed here.
