A community champion from Burslem has received a surprise seasonal gift from a local optician in recognition of her voluntary work for the town.

June Cartwright, aged 78, founder of the Our Burslem Facebook page and community group was presented with Christmas goodies from Holly Thomas, manager at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care.

June is a treasured member of the Burslem community (Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care).

Holly said: "It was part of our company's festive campaign to celebrate customers who we felt deserved a treat.

"June works tirelessly to bring recognition and rejuvenation to the local community, putting on events and organising trips as well as finding sponsors and donations to support the town.

"She works selflessly to ensure Burslem continues to thrive and be welcoming."

June said: "I was amazed, it was such a surprise. It is nice to be appreciated and at 78 I am carrying on doing what I do and working with a fantastic team."

Family business Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care asked its 170 branches in England and Wales to nominate customers who they felt deserved a Christmas treat.
