Person 'pronounced dead' after being hit by train between Stoke and Crewe

Train services were disrupted and British Transport Police were called after a person was hit by a train between Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe last night.

British Transport Police say officers were called to the line in Alsager at 6.33pm following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

A spokesperson said: "Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Rail services on the East Midlands Railway between Nottingham and Crewe and the London Northwestern Railway between Birmingham New Street and Crewe were suspended for a number of hours last night and rail replacement buses laid on.

The line was finally cleared and reopened at 11.06pm last night.
