As the nation prepares to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, Stoke-on-Trent City Council is planning events to mark the occasion across the city.
In his role as the Prince of Wales, His Majesty visited Stoke-on-Trent on a number of occasions, including visits to The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery and Hanley Park.
To celebrate His Majesty's Coronation on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey, residents will be given an extra bank holiday on Monday 8 May, in addition to Monday 1 May.
Residents who wish to hold a Coronation celebration are invited to come together to celebrate, with the city council waiving the usual road closure fees providing the event is free to attend.
The city will also be taking part in national events including:
- The Coronation Big Lunch - Sunday 7 May. This will be a great opportunity for local people and organisations to come together and hold a community get-together. Residents are invited to hold events or picnics in our parks, community centres and other communal venues.
- The Big Help Out - Monday 8 May. Activities for The Big Help Out can take place across the Coronation weekend. Residents are encouraged to reflect on His Majesty's Service by volunteering in the local community. Stoke-on-Trent City Council are working with VAST to provide volunteering opportunities across the city.
As part of the celebrations, royal-themed events will be taking place across Stoke including events in museums across the city.
The Dressing the Royals exhibition at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery will feature iconic costumes created for film and television, highlighting period styles from the sixteenth to the twentieth century worn by kings and queens. The display will include items from five films and two television series and the Coronation Robes of Lord and Lady Bagot of Staffordshire who attended the Coronation of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
Tickets will be £5, concessions £3, and children under 16 go free.
Councillor Abi Brown, leader of the city council said: "For many of our residents there hasn't been a coronation of a British monarch in living memory and so this is the perfect occasion to show pride in our city and come together in your communities with friends, family and neighbours. We love seeing communities come together so we have made it as easy as possible for residents to apply for a road closure.
"Of course, lots of communities don't need a road closure and will be having fun in their gardens or other community spaces. Wherever you are celebrating please enjoy yourselves and be considerate of others."
Residents can find more information on Coronation celebrations, including planned events and organising and registering their own event at www.stoke.gov.uk/coronation.
