The recently opened Stoke-on-Trent Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) has been recognised for its positive impact on the local community.

The CDC - which launched in May - has been named 'Highly Commended' in the Community Benefit category at the RICS Awards 2026 (West Midlands).

The award recognises the CDC's role in bringing diagnostic services closer to home as well as the partnership working led by University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM)

The CDC has also been recognised for its efforts involve local people throughout its development, with residents, community representatives and people with lived experience involved in the design, accessibility and overall environment of the CDC.

UHNM says this helped to "ensure it reflects the needs of the people who use it".

During the construction of the CDC, located at the site of the former Sainsbury's on Etruria Road in Hanley, UHNM also held careers events, school visits, training opportunities and work experience placements for local young people.

Simon Wilmore, senior capital project manager at UHNM, said: "I'm incredibly proud of everyone involved in delivering the CDC.

"This project was delivered against a challenging programme yet the team consistently demonstrated professionalism, clear communication and a strong commitment to quality.

"Their collaborative approach ensured the scheme remained on track and aligned with the Trust's ambition to expand diagnostic capacity and improve patient access.

"The completion of this facility represents a meaningful step forward for our local community, and I am grateful for the dedication and expertise shown by everyone involved."

According to UHNM, the CDC is expected to provide around 180,000 additional tests and scans every year for people across Stoke-on-Trent, North Staffordshire and the surrounding areas.

Delivered through a partnership between UHNM and Wesleyan Assurance Society, it forms part of a national NHS programme to improve access to diagnostic tests, reduce waiting times and support earlier diagnosis.

Dr Ann-Marie Morris, Deputy Medical Director at UHNM, said: "This is a fantastic, purpose-built facility with state-of-the-art equipment that will provide an excellent environment for both patients and staff.

"Being based in the centre of Hanley means the service will be accessible, welcoming and much closer to where people live and work, which will make a real difference to the patient experience."
