A Stoke-on-Trent care home has been rated as outstanding by inspectors.

The Care Quality Commission says 1 William Street, which supports autistic people and people with learning disabilities, is providing 'exceptional care' to its five residents.

CQC inspectors upgraded the Fenton care home's rating from 'good' to 'outstanding' after visiting the facility in April.

They found a 'positive and caring culture' focused on promoting people's independence, with relatives and professionals describing staff as kind, compassionate and attentive to residents' needs.

As well as being given a say in the care they received, residents were also involved in decisions about their home, such as how communal areas were decorated.

And leaders monitored the service closely which meant they were able to identify issues and act quickly to address them.

Amanda Lyndon, CQC's deputy director of adult social care in the West Midlands, believes staff at the care home, which is run by Choices Housing Association Limited, should be 'extremely proud' of the inspectors' findings.

She said: "During our inspection, we found leaders and staff at 1 William Street provided exceptional care built around a deep understanding of each person's individual needs, preferences and background.

"Staff knew people extremely well and used that knowledge to help them live full and meaningful lives.

"People and their relatives told us staff treated them with kindness and respected their dignity and choices. Relatives also told us they felt confident in the quality of care their loved ones received and that staff were compassionate and highly attentive.

"We found staff helped people to live the lives they wanted. They supported one person to reconnect with an important family member and worked with another to reduce their medication safely which improved their confidence and communication.

"When a person had concerns about receiving healthcare, the manager made sure their wishes remained at the centre of decisions about their care, which meant they felt heard and in control."

The home was rated as outstanding in the 'caring' and 'well-led' categories, and good in 'safe', 'effective' and 'responsive'.
