Stoke-on-Trent City Council has been asked to cut meat and dairy products from its menus as part of its action to tackle climate change.

A number of local authorities have already switched to serving only plant-based foods at events – and Eva Hvozdíková has called on Stoke council to do the same.

In a question to Thursday's full council meeting she said: "Stoke-on-Trent City Council declared a climate emergency in July 2019 and issued a Climate Change Report in February 2022. With the situation in the UK and abroad rapidly escalating, now is the time for actions to back up the words.

"Such actions need to embrace every aspect of council activity, including food provision. Other councils, for example Exeter City, Oxfordshire, Cambridge City, and have committed to serve only plant-based food at their events, and I'd like Stoke-on-Trent to do the same.

"I would like to see our council be part of the solution, not continue to spend money on meat and dairy, which we know to be part of the problem – will the council commit to serving fully plant-based fare at all future catered events as other councils have done? This will be a positive and forward-thinking step, bringing food policy in line with other climate-aware policies."

Councillor Duncan Walker, cabinet member for climate change and regeneration, said at Thursday's meeting he would be willing to meet with Ms Hvozdíková to discuss the matter further. He added in his written response: "Thank you for raising this.

"I concur with your sentiments in terms of the need for positive action to support the environmental sustainability and health benefits that can be associated with a plant-based approach. Although as an individual cabinet member I do not have the authority to set policy, I can assure you that the city council is committed to offering plant-based products at our catered events and we will always do so where we have the autonomy."
