A nurse based at University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) has received a national award in recognition of her work caring and supporting people with bowel cancer.

At Bowel Cancer UK's Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards, Dorothy Munyanyi, lead colorectal clinical nurse specialist at UHNM, was presented with the 'colleague-nominated' award.

The awards recognise colorectal cancer nurses across the country who have had a significant impact on those affected by bowel cancer.

Dorothy's team chose to nominate her for the award because of her clinical leadership and work to improve colorectal cancer care, including developing a nurse-led follow-up pathway to ensure patients needing high-risk surveillance receive timely monitoring and any potential concerns are identified early.

She also led the development of colorectal cancer patient information at UHNM, working with patients and colleagues to create written and visual resources to help people better understand their diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care.

Dorothy's colleagues made reference to the support she gives the team with judges highlighting her "clinical leadership, innovation and commitment to developing others" and her passion for improving patient care.

Speaking about her win, Dorothy said: "I feel incredibly proud and honoured to receive this award.

"I am privileged to work with an excellent multidisciplinary team at UHNM so I see this recognition as a reflection of our shared commitment to providing compassionate care for our patients.

"Supporting people through their cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up is at the heart of what we do and I'm passionate about making sure patients feel informed and supported throughout their care.

"I'm very grateful to my colleagues who nominated me and to everyone who continues to support and believe in me.

"It makes receiving this award particularly special."

Dorothy was granted a £300 bursary as part of the award, which will be used to help further improve care and support for UHNM patients.
