Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service looking for more on-call firefighters
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are currently looking for on-call firefighters right across the county. Applicants will need to be over 18 years old and be able to respond to a fire station within five minutes.
Adam Jones, 40 from Burslem is an on-call firefighter and said he first got involved when he saw his neighbour running down the road a few times. On one occasion he asked him why and got told about the on-call firefighting role, which led to him signing on.
Adam previously worked in the betting industry but since taking on the on-call firefighter role in 2018 now works as a community support officer for the Service due to the transferable skills he has gained.
Adam said: "It has opened the doors to other opportunities for new roles and given me the transferable skills for the job I've got now.
"The work life balance is difficult and I always say you've got to make sure your family are onboard, as long as everyone is onboard it's fantastic, it is always rewarding. There is nothing more rewarding than helping people
"Since taking on the role my health and wellbeing has improved exponentially, the brigade are absolutely brilliant at managing your physical and mental wellbeing"
On-call firefighters will have the same training as full-time firefighters and provide approximately 50 hours each week 'on-call' cover to their local fire station.
Most on-call firefighters have primary jobs and the Fire Service says that many employers are flexible at allowing employees to serve in the Fire Service. You will also receive a salary which is around 18 percent of a full-time firefighter as well as a disturbance fee and an hourly rate for any incidents you attend.
Northern Service Delivery Group Manager Dave Steele said: "We're really keen to hear from people who have perhaps never considered being a firefighter before.
"The role is paid, flexible, rewarding and you will be providing emergency fire cover for the area in which you live.
"We have people from a range of backgrounds who are on-call firefighters – carers, full time mums, bakers and accountants to name a few.
"We're particularly in need of daytime cover and we're hoping that the increase in people working from home may open us up to a new pool of people."
