Scheme to turn closed Newcastle-under-Lyme car park into flats moves forward

Plans to turn a closed multi-storey car park in Newcastle-under-Lyme into flats have taken a step forward.
Plans for the Midway car park in Newcastle town centre will see the 1960s five-storey structure converted into 111 flats with a social area, gym, mini cinema and lounge.
Now developer, Capital&Centric, has entered into a pre-construction services agreement with Clegg Construction with work set to begin 'in the autumn' after the plans were approved by Newcastle borough council earlier this year.
Capital&Centric is also redeveloping the former York Place shopping centre into flats and with further plans for flats on the Ryecroft site. As well the developer has been chosen by Stoke-on-Trent council to lead the regeneration project at the Spode Works following the completion of Goods Yard.
Simon Tagg, council leader at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said: "It's great news that this pioneering scheme, one of three being delivered for the council by Capital & Centric to reimagine Newcastle town centre, has reached an exciting new phase.
"We're really looking forward to seeing this visionary project – the first of its type in the country – come to life which will attract new people into the area who will in turn support our local businesses."
Developers say the plans for the multi-storey, which will now be known as Karparc, are a 'UK first' and there will be a mix of one- and two-bedroom flats once complete.
John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said: "This isn't your average regeneration. We're flipping expectations of what's possible in our towns.
"Signing with Clegg Construction means Karparc is one big step closer, bringing new homes, green spaces and energy to a spot that's long been overlooked. We can't wait to get going this autumn."
